LATEST TIP

It seems that over the years I’ve mellowed. Not sure why, but there are times when I feel that a cross stitch project doesn’t have to be stitched the way that it’s graphed. I’m sure that if you have looked around on our walls, you’ll see what I mean! Want to change colors? Go ahead!! Pull the colors that are in the graph, and change them to the colors that you like. Make sure you pull the same color value as in the graph. For example, light for a light, medium for a medium, etc. Come take a look at one of our recent models which was framed. Each leg of the frame is a different color and we changed the threads to our overdyed threads. Dare to be different, I say!!!

Same holds true for needlepoint. As long as you are putting light on light, or dark on dark, it doesn’t matter what color goes onto the area. As long as YOU are happy with the change. Stitchers ask me ‘can I use a variety of threads on my project? Don’t I have to use the same thread throughout?’ My answer to them is this: do you go to a salad bar, and pay $7.99 just for lettuce? I hope not. You can use as many fibers on a canvas as you like. It’s always good to have fiber in your canvas (just like in your diet!!)

Knitters and crocheters- do the same thing. No reason why colors have to be the same as your instructions.

Anyone can change any color on any form of needlework regardless of what your instructions say!!! Your instructions are not written in stone nor are they gospel, so go ahead, feel free, and change wherever it makes you happy. You stitch because you enjoy it, so enjoy it more with the colors and fibers of your choice!

PREVIOUS TIPS

As most of you know, we do finishing in-house. “Finishing” means that we can make your needlework into a pillow, stocking, bellpull, tallis bag, etc. What do we have to do to the canvas before it gets finished? We have to stretch it, and sometimes the stretching has to be done several times. How can that be eliminated? The use of stretcher bars and scroll bars has been used on needlework for centuries. They are not new gadgets. Not everyone can stitch without their work getting out of shape. Stretcher bars/scroll bars should always be used when you are doing fancy stitches or using a variety of threads.

When you stitch with a metallic thread, you should never use any other thread in the same needle. The eye of the needle gets sharpened by the metallic and can cut the other thread like a “hot knife thru butter.” I got lazy one time and decided not to change needles. Boy, did I ever learn a lesson. The fiber I was using (Flair) cut in half as I started to stitch with it because the eye of the needle got sharp after stitching with the metallic fiber I was using (Tiara.) So, don’t get lazy like I did---change your needle!!!
